The lobby’s layout offers a cutting-edge example of how public space can be planned. Beyond the double-height entry, the ceiling falls to a grotto-like level for the reception area, where a veritable jungle of real greenery looms and the massive desk’s live-edge oak top rests on a gnarled teak-root base. However, a perpendicular axis extending 130 feet was much more intimidating than this straight-ahead progression.

The gallery was designed by Meyer Davis Studio as an uninterrupted series of small seating areas arranged along a main circulation path. All of the white slipcovered sofas, armchairs, and ottomans by Paola Navone are incredibly stylish.

Downstairs, the dining room is decorated with tables and chairs made of teak with a beachy feel. A rough-luxe lounge up top has floor lamps with bases made of mangrove roots and Mexican-style chairs with saddle-leather seats.

Utilizing reclaimed woods like mushroom wood, Javanese teak root, driftwood, white oak, bleached walnut, beetle kill pine, and spalted maple, as well as naturally poured and polished concrete floors, the hotel’s design emphasizes the natural textures of the materials.

Conclusion

The 1 Hotel South Beach is located directly on 600 feet of Atlantic Ocean beachfront on Collins Avenue, in Miami’s natural paradise. The 1968 structure’s lower eight stories needed to be converted into a hotel, while the upper eight were turned into apartments, and this work fell to Meyer Davis Studio. There is a clear celebration of nature throughout the 426 rooms of the hotel, from the elegantly twisted driftwood furnishings to the constant sounds of the ocean and an abundance of living natural material.
