SAs part of the Furniture for Families initiative, top 100 retailer Levin Furniture & Mattress collaborated with KDKA talk show host and investigative reporter Marty Griffin to donate $5,000 worth of furniture to three families.
Levin gave three local families $5,000 in furniture along with a $500 gift card to a store of their choice as well as the furniture as a gift. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania selected and anonymously nominated families in need. Mikhal Wallace, Shakira Freeman, and Jason Perez were this year’s honorees.
“At our company, we’re a family and this is what families do. We come together and give aid to those in need,” said Michael Lewis, sales training manager at Levin Furniture & Mattress.
Perez at first thought that this program was a rip-off. Knowing that they would have to part with some of their possessions, he chose to relocate his family to a safer area for his children. They recently relocated from a small apartment into a new house with almost no furniture. Their family of five was sleeping on a queen-size mattress together.
Wallace, a single mother, received a Christmas present early for her family. She moved out with her 2-year-old son and was having financial difficulty when her mother nominated her for the program. She didn’t have a place for her family to gather for dinner, her mattress had a hole in it that she filled with towels, and her son didn’t have a crib of his own.
Cynthia, Freeman’s mother, put her family forward because they are committed to giving back to their community and deserving of treating their kids to new furniture. In order to host dinners as a family, the Freemans will buy a new dining set.
