ARCHDALE, N.C. – Lancaster Custom Crafted Upholstery, a manufacturer of fine, hand-crafted upholstery for the design industry, has announced plans to expand operations and invest more than $5 million to build a new facility in Archdale, N.C. The facility will be more than 60,000 square feet in size. The business will leave its 18,000 square foot location in the nearby Interstate Business Park.
To accommodate growing customer demand, the expansion will add more manufacturing and office space. The company claims that Lancaster has outgrown its current facility and has experienced multiple years of double-digit sales growth.
Since there is no room for expansion at its current location, the business has found a nearby greenfield site in Archdale where it will build the new building. The facility relocation is planned for 2024.
Lancaster was weighing its options for growth at one point, debating whether to move into Virginia or North Carolina.
“The support from The City of Archdale and Randolph County was a predominant factor in our decision to remain in this area,” said owner Bill Lancaster. “The new and improved facility will provide our entire team with many additional benefits, allowing us to better serve our customers.”
25 full-time employees will remain with the company, and over a five-year period, the company will also add at least 27 new jobs. For a variety of jobs in management, marketing, customer service, sewing, framing, and upholstery, the average annual salary is anticipated to be $46,000. Many local suppliers with whom Lancaster has established enduring relationships will gain from the expansion, the business claims.
To persuade Lancaster to pick Archdale as the location for the company’s expanded facility, the City of Archdale and Randolph County jointly offered local incentives totaling up to $120,700 over five years.
“I cannot tell you how excited we are for Lancaster’s impending expansion in Archdale,” said Lewis Dorsett, the mayor of Archdale. “Everyone benefits greatly when a developing local business decides to invest in Archdale and remain in our neighborhood. As we collaborated to ensure that this opportunity was not lost, we are appreciative of our ongoing relationships with the Randolph County Commissioners and the Economic Development Corporation.”
According to the company, Bill Lancaster founded Lancaster in 1986, and it has since grown to be a coveted brand and a symbol of supreme craftsmanship for handcrafted upholstery.
